Enjoyed an evening at the Philly Zoo.  The eagles have a new perch.  As the sun was setting I was very pleased to capture a hint of a catch light in this wonderful eagle's eye.

Taking the time to slow down and observe what is going on around me.  From today's walk in the meadow a current pest - the stink bug.  She really fits well into this environment.  The image was captured on an overcast day which provided a wonderful shadow-less light.  Today's level of photographic technology is amazing.  A photo like this would have been very hard to make a decade ago.  Now we have cameras that can capture a high iso image that is virtually noiseless with a good dynamic range -- all done without flash but with a lens with great vibration reduction built in.

First Friday in Skippack PA.  Paul Dengler is "Forest Gump" this evening.  He did a great job in character.  PaulDengler.com
"Thank you for letting me do this for you." Incense burning outside of the Southwest Trading Post on First Friday.
"Me and Bobby McGee" was played by the Skippack band, Sheetrock.  I love that song.

The setting at Pennypacker Mills was intimate, very close access to the action.

Civil War Reenactment at Pennypacker Mills, Schwenksville, PA.  This is a great venue to get a sense of American history and how life was lived before this current "modern" age.  Pennypacker Mills is located at 5 Haldeman Rd, Schwenksville, PA 19473.
Civil War Reunion at Pennypacker Mills, Schwenksville, PA. My favorite shot from the day.

Visited the Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College today.  There are several powerful pieces in their collection.  This is George R. Anthonisen's sculpture of "Murder/Cain and Able."  George has a website at http://ganthonisen.com/

Today the sky was overcast with light rain from time to time. A nice opportunity to capture saturated colors and take advantage of the reduced dynamic range.  From time to time I visit this abandoned home to see if I can do a better job of capturing the atmosphere at this location. The raw image was taken with a Nikon 1 V1, ISO 100, 1/60 sec @ f/4.5. with the Nikkor 1 VR 6.7-13mm lens.

A Nikon 1 camera with the FT-1 adapter and the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 can be a useful combination for close-up photography. This particular image was taken at ISO 1600, 30mm at F/4.0.  The Sigma allows for very close focusing - on the Nikon 1 at 30mm the lens is effectively an 80mm.

A Nikon 1 camera with the FT1 adapter can make a very nice system for close-up photography.  Pairing the Nikon 85 mm f/3.5 Micro with the Nikon 1 gives a good working distance so light can be added.  Lighting was provided by a small lcd panel (3" x 5") with fill provided by a white piece of cardboard on the opposite side. This combination is equivalent to a 230 mm macro lens on a 35 mm system.  An additional benefit is the expanded depth of field. This tooth would fit on a penny.

Longwood Gardens is a very worthy destination in SE Pennsylvania.  The Conservatory, shown here, is a 4 acre horticultural wonder.

Spring is in the air in Southeastern Pennsylvania.  The electronic shutter on a Nikon 1 V1 facilitated this hand held shot with a 300mm lens (35mm equivalent 810mm).  The technique is to hold the camera very steady and shoot several shots in a rapid sequence.  Without a mirror and mechanical shutter movement, camera motion is negligible.

Later winter snowfall in the floodplain of the Perkiomen Creek in SE Pennsylvania.  The sky is overcast, very appropriate for this winter.

Nesting eagles in Southeastern PA. To get a sharp image from a long distance my solution has been to use a Nikon 1 V1 with the FT-1 adapter which let me use a Nikon 300mm f/4 lens and a 1.4 adapter.  The gives the maximum reach for my system.  To get a sharp image also requires a very stable tripod and a remote trigger to minimize camera shake.
